Newsome Parent FAQs

How is the organization structured?
In addition to the teams themselves, the organization is split into Coaching Staff who manage everything that happens on the ice, and Booster Association or 'Board' who support the coaches and help take care of administrative work, fundraising efforts - basically 'off ice' work.

How much does it cost?
For the Fall Season, Fees are paid to both LHSHL and to the Newsome Hockey Program. 2021-22 Fall Season pricing was around $850 for the LHSHL component and $180 for the Newsome Registration fee. That being said, we offer volunteering opportunities through the season and many families have received a check back for more than they paid for the Newsome Registration as a result. LHSHL has offered a monthly payment plan in past years and hardship scholarships are available. Spring Season costs will vary depending on levels of participation and prevailing overhead costs - Ice etc..

I heard that you're not directly affiliated with the Newsome High School?
Correct - Although we recruit directly and exclusively from Newsome High School, Hockey is not recognized by the FHSAA (Florida High School Athletic Association). The League is organized & regulated by the Lightning High School Hockey League, and while teams are named after their Schools, they are not directly affiliated.

Who is the program open to?
Fall season (Aug-Mar) is open solely to Newsome High School Students. We usually also run a Spring Season from April through June. Spring Season is open to rising 8th graders through rising Seniors. Spring Season is not run by LHSHL and is generally more relaxed.

Where can we keep track of events?
SportsEngine. SportsEngine. SportsEngine. We expect our players to RSVP to events posted in SportsEngine - both for practices and games. As a parent, you should be encouraging accountability from your player(s) to manage this themselves. We recommend installing the SportsEngine App on your mobile device.

Who do you play? Where do you play?
Newsome Hockey competes in the LHSHL Varsity and Junior Varsity Leagues. These regular season games take place at rinks in the local area. Varsity State Championships may happen anywhere in the State of Florida, and National Championships may happen anywhere in the country. Travel & Lodging for States and Nationals are not included in the annual dues as they are performance based.

What Uniforms Does a Newsome Player Need, And How Are They Acquired?
All players, regardless of season and team (Wolves, Wolverines, JV), must have all three game jerseys (White, Blue, and Black), the three pairs of game socks that go with each of the three jerseys, and the single dark blue pant shell.  It is an individual responsibility for each player to buy and maintain these uniform items.  The team/program does NOT provide them.

All new comers must first coordinate with the head coach to obtain an assigned number from among those numbers that are available.  Remember that there are approximately 50 to 60 returning players in the program each year, so it is quite possible that your favorite uniform number is already assigned and therefore not available.  You should have a few choices in mind when you coordinate with the coach.  This will, normally, be your number for the entire time you are in the Newsome Hockey Program.  In some instances, when a player with a number you like graduates, that number could be assigned (by the head coach) to you later – and you get to bear any cost associated with updating your uniforms to the new number.

With the uniform number the coach assigns to you, you can then go on line to visit the “Newsome Page” on the RinkSideSports Website:

We do maintain a small inventory of white and blue jerseys for temporary use for newcomers while they are waiting for their ordered uniforms to come in.  We do not maintain extra black uniforms.

We understand that it is a significant outlay of funds to acquire all of these items.  If you prefer to spread the cost out over time – please order the white and blue jerseys first, followed by the game socks and pant shell, and finally the black jersey and socks.   Practice jerseys are optional.

Please understand that these uniform items are yours to keep.  If they require maintenance, or need to be replaced as a player grows and needs a larger jersey, that is also an individual responsibility.

Can my kid get his favorite number?
The answer is maybe. If it's available. Numbers are approved as a priority for returning players and seniority.

Parent Involvement

Parents can play many roles in sport: current or former athlete, coach, fan, motivator, role model or critic. A few studies have shown that family members may influence an athlete’s involvement and achievement in sport more than coaches. Parents also are the first and most critical agents at socializing sports.

Parents and athletes need to manage their SportsEngine accounts to ensure they get the most out of their Newsome Hockey experience during each sporting season. With their accounts properly configured, athletes and their families will receive communications according to their preferences and be able to complete registrations more efficiently.  SportsEngine has created a Team Management Guide for Parents and Athletes that will help our members with frequently asked questions about our website and mobile app.
